HISTORY OF DOWAN OKON FOUNDATION DOWAN OKON FOUNDATION is a Non-Governmental Organization, (NGO), founded by IQUO OQUA BASSEY, on September 20, 1997. It was founded in memory of her beloved brother, Mr. Okon Joe Edubio; to facilitate her welfare outreach to indigent widows and orphans. The establishment of this noble Organization was predicted on the fact that it was not convenient for Late Okon's young widow and little children to relocate to Calabar on his demise, and communication was difficult. It was first known as DORCAS ORPHAN AND WIDOWS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA with (DOWAN) as her acronym. However, the name posed uncomfortability to members who were not widows, so the name was changed to DORCAS WELFARE ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA with (DOWAN) still as her acronym. In 2023, DORCAS WELFARE ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (DOWAN) applied for Registration with Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria (CAC), who demanded a new name in consonance with the Humanitarian Services/objectives of the Organization. It was on this premise that the name was again changed to DOWAN OKON FOUNDATION still in memory of her beloved brother, Mr. Okon Joe Edubio. (DOWAN) has remained her acronym and nickname for purposes of easy identification by our associates of so many years. All documents bearing her former names remain valid.
